I like the look of a rugby shirt and kilt but tend to agree with the others, that since it's a casual look it'd look best with boots and pushed down hose.
What is it the wife doesn't like? The color combo? or the dress vs casual thing?
If it's the color combo... try a dark colored rugby shirt instead, like navy blue or hunter green perhaps.

What she doesn't like is the wide stripes of the shirt with the tartan. I think it's fine (if the stripes were smaller I'd probably think differently). So I thought I'd float it out to the ladies and gentlemen of X Marks and see what you folks thought.

    Cheers

yeah, I agree, if the stripe was smaller it'd be different. Too many patterns competing. I say as long as it's wide you're good to go.
But push down the darn hose!

...and having looked on the web for Scotland rugby shirts and seeing the $$$ shipping charges, I think that it would behoove one or another of our US kilt makers/supliers to look into carrying them as part of their regular line...and kids/young adults sizes would probably sell reasonably well, too.
