Its a great experience for your son to see dad going through the work to make a kilt for him. Making clothes is getting to be a lost art, even for women (my wife had a sewing machine when we got married, but didn't know how to use it until I showed her), and I can look back to many early childhood experiences watching my Dad, Mom, and Grandparents make things which spawned my desire and ability to get crafty. It has really come in handy at times.
