			Question in mind

Hello from up north. I would have a small dilemma at hand and I would like to find out the answer to it. I am not orginally born in Scotland neither in Ireland.I am not anyhow related to any Clans nor to any scot/irishman.
But does this mean that I cannot wear a kilt? Stupid question indeed but still I just want to make sure that I am not stepping on anyones toes. I am thinking of making one because we are basicly going to start to practice somekind of a live-roleplaying game and are planning to follow the traditional way of scottish in 14th century. Is it ok to wear kilt even without anykind of blood relationship?

 Thank you for your time.

Wear what you like. Anyone who wants to give you a hard time for wearing clothing you like isn't worth listening to.

Most especially, don't bother listening to the self-appointed Tartan Police who will try to tell you that you're not allowed to wear certain tartans.

That said, you'd probably want to make sure you know which tartan you're wearing, just so you can answer people who ask, and show some level of respect while you're wearing it.

"I will give your comments all of the consideration they are due" is my generic pat answer instead of telling them to bugger off...

To my way of thinking, if they will sell you the material you can wear a kilt. Only tartans I know offhand that would be hard to get are the Balmoral and West Point.

Sounds like you need to delve into your family history a little deeper...Scots, Irish, Welsh...all prolific and liable to turn up on a lot of family trees in unexpected places.
If truely no, then there are many commerative tartans - were you in the service? Does your university, state, city, company you work for have a tartan? There are many fashion tartans - tartans developed for sale rather than as a clan affiliation. There are bazillions of solid color kilts too.

But you can also wear most any tartan you wish, if, as pointed out its worn with pride and respect.

By "Up North", do you mean Canada? There are plenty of Canadian provincial tartans, plus the Maple Leaf tartan.

 Thank you for your time.

And what ethnic background(s) are you, if I may be so bold -- the reason for my asking is that there are tartans for other nationalities, such as:

 German
 Italian
 Dutch
 Norwegian

Just to name a few. So Don't dispair -- you may find a tartan yet!

A good web site to peruse is:
