You get the smilies option by first clicking "Go Advanced" and then waiting for the new edit window. Clicking a smily at the side inserts it as a code. You can see your posting properly displayed by clicking "Preview" before you finally commit to posting it. You can keep re-editing up till then. Same goes if you insert pictures, you can check the result before actually posting for real.

) ........ However, I see no "Go Advanced" upon which to click, and I believe I have looked everywhere! 
The "Preview" facility is not actually new, and I invariably use it to check everything is in order before I post anything.
