I explained wearing mine to a family Thanksgiving get together like this. "First of all, it is very comfortable, and secondly, if I'm going to pay between $300 and $500 for something, I should wear it more than just to Celtic events"

Does anyone know if it's common to be asked why you are wearing a kilt in Scotland? Just curious, I intend to be kilted a lot back home and wonder if questions are common there too. You'd think not, huh?

I have never been asked why when I have been kilted in Scotland.
The usual question is from tourists saying "can I have a photograph?"

Yes (depends upon where and in which context). Most people dash about, after all, in Scotland as well as Ireland in an assortment of "leisure" or "casual ware", overwhelmingly made in PR China and ranging from jeans to jogging suits with trainers. The sight of jeans, Bolo ties and "cowboy boots" is oddly more common and less something to stare at then kilts or even knee breeches. Traditional Irish garb is more to be found on the streets of London, Oxford or Cambridge than in Belfast or Dublin. In parts of the Highlands and in some schools kilts are de rigueur but its only in the past few years that its become less a "special sight" in Edinburgh or Glasgow. A lot of football fans wear kilts to watch games. Still. if your "dressed to kilt" you will none-the-less probably draw some looks and maybe even a question or two.

The week we spent in Scotland in Sept I was kilted the whole time, either my UK or a traditional kilt. I had two women at a tea shop say they appreciated a man with enough sense to wear a kilt. Another few merely stated the kilt looked good in passing. The only others I saw kilted were P1M and some guys at a train station dressed for a wedding. Otherwise, nobody seemed to pay much attention. Wear your kilt and enjoy it.

I had this exact question last week at a local convience store. The question caused several folks around me to stop what they were doing to hear the answer. (kind of reminded of the old EF Hutton commercials ) My answer, 'I am over 40, 6 foot 2 250 pounds.... I wear it because I WANT TO'. One of the guys near me almost dropped his coffee when he heard that.

Another good one. Pants are like cheap motels, no ballroom. And I love to dance! Works every time.
