That is an ambitious undertaking. I can see the yellow appliqued to the apron . I would not recommend trying to make the yellow work in the pleats. The time and effeort tequired of this are going to make you crazy!

Judging by the dry runs I have done, with paper and fabric, I don't think it is going to be too tough. I hope to find out today or tomorrow. It will be about the same as the applique on the front, after I cut it out. I am still working on the pleating so we will see how bad it gets to be.

If this doesn't work out for whatever reason, you might want to try sewing a team crest to the front apron instead. Then there would be no doubt as to your team loyalties.!

I have a black stillwater economy with the old sabres logo on it, that was the start of the idea. If it doesn't work, I will probably just take the blue that I have left over and put a slug logo on it and call it a day

    Picture time

First thing I did was lay the yellow on top of the blue, below the fell line and pleat the kilt. It ended up being 18 pleats.

Once that was done I created a template for the detail and traced it onto the yellow that was already pleated.

After that was done I had to unpleat the whole kilt:

Then I had to repleat the yellow fabric so I could cut it out, this allows the fabric to be continuous and it will allow the yellow to flow into the undersides of the pleats:

This is what it looked like cut out, the blue chalk lines are the actual stripe I cut out extra to hem it:

Now came the part I was most afraid of heming the stripe, I have never been really good at hemming things and to be honest I am still not that good at it, but here is the pinned version.

I then pinned the strip onto the blue and repleated to see if this was going to work. It is not sewn down and the hemming still needs some work, but that isn't sewed either. I still have some work on this part but for the most part I am pleased that it is close to working:

You can see the first few pleats need some work to get it to line up better, and I will get there before I sew it. I wanted to get some pictures up tonight though, and since I am watching the Bills right now I didn't know if I would get back to it. I plan to hand sew the stripe on the blue, then go back over it on the maching, but I feel I have better control with hand sewing than with a machine. I will probably get it all lined up, and then hand sew the yellow on top of the pleats and then follow up with the inside of the pleats. My goal is to finish it before I go home for Christmas (December 23rd)

    Hand sewing and pleating again

Well the Bills won and I was inspired, I decided to finish one 'stripe' tonight:

Here is me hand sewing the strip on to the fabric:

This is what it looks like sewn onto the blue fabric:

Pleated with the strip sewn down

That's a fantastic project Keith! I can't wait to see the finished kilt.

    Almost Done

    I have finished the back:

The pleats expand just the way I want them to:

The only thing left to do is to finish the front, and add velcro
