Survivals are dressey
Last evening we attended at male chorus Christmas event and I had on my black Survival from UK, black kilt hose, and a red, knit, short sleeved shirt. My wife came home from Christmas shopping and her cross stitch group meeting, and looked at me and said, "Since you are so dressed up, do I have to change? I feel like wearing my jeans." I told her to wear what was comfortable and that I thought she looked nice anyway.
Wow, what will she think when she sees me in my new USA Kilt, casual, with new green hose, flashes to match the kilt, in the Buccleuch tartan? The only thing that is going to be so different is that I won't have pockets, only a sporran. My hands won't know what to do and I won't keep them in my sporran. haha
DALE.
You don't have to be Scottish to be comfortable!

I went through that yesterday notknowing where to put my hands, but they dont fit well in a sporran.
Maybe you could hide them in your pleats?

Hands in pockets? Shame on ya!
Not that most civilians know this, but hands in pockets is a MAJOR no-no for Soldiers and Marines (I can't speak for the other Services; never served in 'em). So, in a typically military bureaucratic manner, military jackets like the M-65 Field Jacket and the A-2 leather aviator's jacket have no side-entry pockets you CAN place your hands in! BTW, this same sort of thing is why we have useless buttons on out jacket sleeves - they were originally put there to discourage soldiers from using the sleeve to wipe their nose!
Me, if I'm standing still, in line or whatever, I tend to grasp one wrist with the other hand - please don't be 'that guy' who has to swing his arms and clap his hands, or incessantly click a pen, or play with his hair (tho it's women who are especially bad at this!) - just for lack of something better to do with himself!

So thats what those buttons are for, I've often wondered and never asked. It's also discouraged in the army. I didn't serve (long story as why not but not for the lack of trying) but grew up in mainly army family.

I didn't serve in the military, but I was a cadet in the CAP. The customs and courtesies manual follows the Air Force regs pretty close and hands in pockets was a definite no.

Then Why Do We refer to Solders with their hands in their pockets
as "wearing Airforce Gloves"
I believe the Marine Corps does the same only "Army Gloves" is the term.
Back on Topic:
There has been times when I wish My kilt had pockets, mostly when i need a place to put my keys or Wallet.
Typically I loop My thumbs through my sporran straps when standing still.

Now when I was in the Army we called it "Ranger mittens".

I tend to stand or walk with arms in "at ease" position held together behind my back. It helps maintain a good posture.

On the rare occasions I need to find someplace for my hands (other than in my wifes ) I tend to loop my thumbs in the belt.
