I believe the Marine Corps does the same only "Army Gloves" is the term.
Back on Topic:
There has been times when I wish My kilt had pockets, mostly when i need a place to put my keys or Wallet.
Typically I loop My thumbs through my sporran straps when standing still.
Now when I was in the Army we called it "Ranger mittens".
