American Football Question

Somewhere I missed it.

What are those armband/sweatband things American football players are wearing on their arms just above their elbows??

I haven't kept up with NFL action in a long time. I finally one day just realized, "Hey, I'm not that weird for not really being that thrilled about sports..." ha.

Honestly, it's just a fashion thing. They have no practical use except maybe to make their arms look bigger like the Ultimate Warrior from Wrestling used to do back in the day. Essentially it's a 1/2" sweatband, that's it. So, the question is how much sweat can a half inch sweatband absorb? Absolutely NOTHING!! So long post short it's just for looks

I'm so olde that single bar face masks were the new thing when I was waterboy/team manager for my high school football team. Much too scrawny then to play a position. We managed to win four games out of 36 played during my four years with the team.

One of the most common injuries was from getting cleated in the face...a set of football cleats can tear up a nose. Them new fangled face masks were welcome and a sign of coolness.

Well, at least now I understand them armband things the players are always fiddling with.

Yeah, as cgrinder pointed out, they make your muscles look big by making your veins pop out a bit. It's a psychological thing, like taping every knuckle on your hands. It does nothing, but makes you feel like you're "suited up" for battle...much like a kilt...except a kilt is practical as well!!!

It's not just professional sports, actually College does it more than the Pro's. But why can't you understand people who watch Professional Sports?

I don't understand American football! I guess Andy Griffiths explanation of it in his skit " What it was, was football" isn't the real explanation after all, huh? :rolleyes:

You probably see it less in pros because of the uniform restrictions. Players are fined for violating the dress code. Dion Sanders paid a fine for every game just so he could wear his jersey "like he liked it".
