That's why I am--right this minute--wearing a tweed jacket with elbow patches, a sweater vest and long tie (no bows for me, but it would work), cordouroy pants, and tassel loafers. We just covered a little bit of renaissance lit this AM....
Jim, as long as you have the elbow patches, a regular tie is an acceptable substitute for the bow tie. Better work on getting that cashmere scarf though. Hopefully you weren't teaching anything too challenging this morning, 'Tis Pity She's a Whore is a bit much if your coffee hasn't kicked in.

Adam I think that this holds true of everything a gentleman or lady wears.
We worry here on X Marks so much about the fashion rules (which granted are very important) that we forget that it's our own confidence that makes an outfit work. I almost always wear my semi formal leather sporran with my all black heavyweight SWK casually. That isn't following the rules, but I think the chrome cantle looks really striking with my round silver celtic knot buckle against the black (and we won't even go into the Siouxsie and Banshees kilt pin). I think it looks smashing and I have never had anyone (including X Markers*) make a comment about it.

To get back to the purpose of this thread, I think if Brian thinks a bow tie is going to look great with his kilt at a show then by golly I bet it will.

    Cheers
