I dunno Robin. Hot crowded pubs might be a good environment for a lighter weight kilt. (Says the man standing in the pub holding a thick wool overcoat that hangs to the calf.)

True, and from experience there is no great distance between pubs in Dumfries, so weight of kilt should be of little concern.

No need to appologise. I have no ambitions as to travelling light on return. I have ordered glass ware from Robertson, a trip to Anderson and Argos, as well as a set of Kilberry bagpipes waiting for me at Ferintosh...

I read somewhere that years ago if a man wanted to show off his wealth he wore a red kilt as these were the most expensive. I don't know why that should be so, but maybe it's why the Royal Stewart is a red tartan. Anyway I always think that red tartans are the classiest and nearly always wear my dark red Prince Charles Edward Stewart kilt to the really 'dressy' do's with my P.C. and silver mounted sporran, (I hope to get a fly plaid in this tartan soon and when I do I can wear my dress dirk with it as well). So I would say wear your Caledonia tartan and show off ! The Kilt is my delight !

For formal dress pick the most colorful. You want to stand out. It's what being a peacock is all about. The Caledonia is a good option. I don't know what the others look like. Save the subdued colors for everyday when you may not want to look so flashy. Also, the heavier fabric will look better and move better.
