The tartan is called the Federal Memorial Tartan. Like the Confederate Memorial Tartan, it was also designed by Phil Smith. I've made a box pleated kilt in it for a client, and I have pictures. I don't always have the easiest time posting pics to the forum, so I've emailed them to Todd in the hopes that maybe he can post them here for you.

    Federal Memorial Tartan...

The Federal Memorial Tartan is No. 4191 in the ITI -- Do a search on the Tartans Authority homepage, and you will pull up an image of the tartan.

The Tartan is a fundraising effort for the Department of Mass., Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War.

    Cheers,

    Thanks Todd,

That is a lovely tartan. Even more meaningful to read the description that its a variant of the Grant tartan. Grant is my middle name, handed down to me and carried on two generations beyond me. But its not our blood clan. Began when my great great grandfather came home (barely) from the Civil War and named his first born son Grant in honor of the general.

Wish the tartan wasn't so similar to the RAF and X Marks that I already have...the lovely mix of light blue and dark blue...gonna have to ponder this one.

I was just reading about the Calgary Highlanders Regiment and came across this little tidbit, so I figured I'd add it to this thread...

Honorary Colonel Richard Bennett originally outfitted the Pipes and Drums with Royal Stewart tartan kilts and plaids in the 1920s; when the band of the 1st Battalion arrived in England in 1940 they were very quickly informed that Royal Stewart was the prerogative of Royal Regiments only and they were to cease wear of that tartan at once. Some musicians in the 2nd Battalion continued to wear the tartan for the duration of the war.
