Yes, that's how it works here in the US too. We donate whole blood for medical needs.
The selling of plasma is a different thing and is done through pharmaceutical companies. They use the plasma for things like extracting clotting factor or, in my case, extracting tetanus anti-toxin.
And, by-the-way, this must date me, because I only got $20 a week when I did it.
