Before I mess up...BADLY
I am attempting to make my first knife pleated kilt after some sucess with my X-marks box pleat. I am using 12 ounce duck with a pattern of 3.75" depth with a 1.5" reveal. I laid out my pattern with the 3.75+the 1.5 and am pleating where sum of the 2 measurements fall. Is this right or should I have allowed for 2x the 3.75 depth + the reveal? I just ran out of pins so this is a good point to stop and ask instead of waiting until I have 30 pleats pinned and pressed in.

Well,,,,seeing as how you are probably using my Cargo Model as your pattern I guess I should answer this.
Your Sett is 9". 3.75+3.75+1.5=9

Having made two kilts out of 10 oz. duck, I feel your pain.
You want to include the reveal (1.5") + the pleat depth (3.75") + the backside of the previous pleat (3.75"); so, yes - 2 x 3.75 + 1.5
If I'm reading your post right, you currently have a pleat reveal of 1.5" and a pleat depth of 1.875" (your 3.75" is halved between the depth of your current pleat and the back of the previous pleat).
Did that help?
Easier version: what Steve said.

Thanks gents,
I shal now retire to my small dark sewing room and un-pin what I have done. I am quite glad I ran out of pins quickly!!!!!!!!! Moral of the story, sometimes you bite the bear, sometimes the bear bites you. But if each bear only gets one bite you are ahead in the game

In light of mine and others posting on another thread regarding professional and DIY'ers, thank you Steve for going above and beyond that of a kilt maker. To spend the time and effort to help ensure that a fellow member enjoys every success in making his own kilt. It is people like you who help make this a truly wonderful forum.
Weasle Mender congratulations and please post pics of the finished product.

I am very confused here. I don't know if there is anger, sarcasm, or actual friendly banter going on here.
Would somebody mind clearing up a bit of this confusion?

Admiration of Steve and his enthusiasm to helping a DIYer on making something based on his own design.

There is absolutely no anger in my posts.
Bobbie is always telling me that if I put out all the information on how I make a Freedom Kilt, someone will steal it and become my competition.
I feel that the information that I have publicly posted here and on my web site is just that, public information. It's nothing that someone with a little initiative and intelligence couldn't figure out for themselves.
And yet I get at least three e-mails or phone calls a week from some guy wanting the easy way to make a kilt. So I tell him. "Buy Barbs book. Read it all the way through, three times. Now you know how a kilt is made. If you want to change something get out your calculator, engage your brain, and figure it out." That's how I did it.
I will eventually publish "The Art of Contemporary Kiltmaking" and all will be revealed. Till then it would be nice if people at least asked. I don't mind telling them. Heck, I'm a teacher by nature. I want others to join us in this world we call kilts. And I understand some can't afford a Freedom Kilt, and others would just prefer to do it themselves.
So hey, the information is free. And "Anything free is worth what you pay for it." RAH.

Thanks. In light of another post made recently, I wasn't totally sure what was the general feeling here.
I am relieved that it is one of open mindedness and learning...
