This thread shows my own figuring out to do sett or stripe (and which stripe).

The graphics were all done in Window's paint, no fancy Photo Shop.

Right. You don't have to have Photoshop, but if you do , there are more tools to get it looking good. The paint program in windows will work fine.

For a graphic editor you might try GIMP at:

    www.gimp.org

this is published under a general public license and is at no cost. I like it because it has a version that works on my U3 compatible flash drive.

It would help if I actually included the link to show what could be done (about 1/2 way down page).

I think if the set itself is quite busy, pleating to a stripe can tone things down a bit and give a different look. The reverse is also true, as shown here. Gordon modern is just Black Watch (two words) with a yellow stripe in the green bar. Stripe pleating adds dramatic effect.

I find that tartans with a strong contrast between
the dominant lines and the area between work well
when pleated to the sett. If there is not much contrast
(like "Black Watch" or "Rob Roy") pleating to the sett
is less successful. If the sett is small or very busy,
pleating to the sett is also less satisfying.

Ive got it in my head to make my son a kilt and di spent most of the other evening staring down at pleats on my table id made in the fabric trying to figure which one i thought looke the best.I was lucky enough to pin the pleats so that in one long piece i had three variations so i could compare and i just didnt like the stripe tried hard but couldnt bring myself to it lol.So his will have the horizonal lines in pleats.now just to get to sewing lol.
