Part Deux...
OK, so I really appreciated all the positive comments but, honestly, my first effort, while effective, was pretty crude. I started over, this time with a slightly larger piece of maple salvaged from the kindling wood box. Applied some band saw work and much more filing and sanding than the original. Five coats of poly with lots of steel wool between coats.

I even added a celtic knot button to the top of the thistle.
