It is very dark. Here's a shot taken in the light, today. With a white shirt.
It's actually a Macdonald of the isles ancient(Dress).
When I first bought it I thought it was fashion tartan, but I was wearing it in a kiltstore one day and the nice old gent who ran it was sure he'd seen it in the rare tartans before.
After a long search he managed to dig out an old sample by J. Pringle weavers (Not that james Pringle, another, I think.) which showed that it was an early attempt at doing a Macdonald of the isles ancient with a white dress stripe.
I was kinda reluctant to believe it at first, because I know there should be another colour in there, but after another kiltmaker confirmed it I was quite happy.
I am a Donald, so it works out just fine for me.
