Dirk Skene- The boat is 63' long and 7' wide and weighs about 30,000lbs with a single diesel engine and a tiller. You go no more than 4 mph on the canals and it is GREAT! Beautiful countryside with cows, sheep, ducks, and swans all along. We went from Falkirk eastbound towards Edinburgh and stayed overnight tied up along the way.
C152Towser- The Utilikilt was the better choice for Canalboating for sure with having to kneel down to reach into the engine space. It was a bit brisk out and we had quite a bit of rain. That didn't slow us at all, just modified our clothing choices.

I am jealous. What a great time of year to be in Scotland. How long were you there for?

We were in Scotland from the 7th through the 18th of May.
Here's a few more pics. I think I'm getting the hang of posting pics. Hope it lasts. I think the pics are clickable.

Even more later,

Oops, I guess the picture titles didn't carry over from Photobucket. I'll fix that on my next post.
The first pic is our attempt at a "staged photo" of me Utilikilting on the canal.
Then some of Rob Roy's grave.
The oldest pub in Scotland, good food too.
Some more canal shots.
Hope I got these right.

Excellent pictures. I like the one taken with flash inside the longer and older of the two canal tunnels. Many years ago I was one of a small group who rowed a boat through this tunnel as part of an adventure course, during the years when the canal was derelict. We had intended to row all the way through the tunnel and then eastwards a further 2 miles to Polmont, but after we had successfully got through the tunnel the boat became stuck in the mud and the reeds and we ended up carrying the boat along the towpath the rest of the way. Since the canal re-opened again to navigation I've been through the tunnel again on a passenger boat - the eleven mile trip from the basin at the bottom of Falkirk Wheel to Linlithgow took around five and a half hours.
