Finally! A good experience...

As I may have mentioned before, where I am from, folks around here aren't very kilt friendly. (that would be southern Ohio) So far, since I have been wearing a kilt, I have had ONE positive comment. Quite discouraging. Good thing I don't wear it for the approval of others, huh? ;)

The past holiday weekend, however, was a different story! My best Bud Greg and I headed up to Columbus Ohio for the annual Marcon convention. Our plan, to stay 3 days and 2 nights hanging out and having a blast. For those who have never heard of Marcon (and I'm sure most haven't) It's a huge sci-fi/fantasy convention. Full of folks dressed up in various sci-fi, fantasy, anime costumes (garb) and having a great time. Lots of things to see and do.

I saw LOTS of utilikilts being worn, as well as a couple of good attempts at a great kilt for various Scottish warrior type characters. I brought my Utilikilt in mossy oak pattern, my SW standard Black Stewart, and my SW economy in black. Turns out, when I tried on my SW black, it didn't quite fit like it used to. Very dissapointing. Never got a chance to use the other SW and spent most of my waking moments in my Utilikilt. (The side pockets made a great drink holster! LOL )

Not only did I not get any negative comments at all the whole weekend, I got a total of 7 big compliments (yeah, I was counting. It seemed too good to be true!) and was even asked *the question* once. My mind was a tad bit pickled when asked, so my comback was not what my brain rehearsed, but was still sufficient.

It felt GREAT! No, better than that...I felt VINDICATED after this awsome weekend. I now have a renewed and refreshed positive attitude about being kilted!

As a side note,,,,my black SW economy became a gift to my buddy Steves 11 yr old boy. His first kilt. Alec was excited and proud..his mommy gave me dagger eyes!! *chuckle* Until a few weeks ago, he really gave me digs about the kilt like only a young boy can..until I challenged him to try one on before he made fun of folks wearing a kilt. Well, about 10 minutes after donning said black kilt....he was a changed boy!! Been bugging his dad ever since to get him one. My growing midsection became his benefactor!! I'll have to get a pic of him up soon wearing it. In the meantime..a snapshot from the hotel room before heading out to the various *room parties*. Can ya tell who went with me? ;)



PS. Them 'Harry Potter Fans' know how to throw a shindig!! Whoot!!

Glad to hear you had a good time in Columbus.

The Dublin Irish Festival, held on August 3rd, 4th and 5th, is very large and well worth attending. There will be dozens of kilted men as well as a number of X Marks members there.

In WV most people ignore the kilt. Had one bad comment this year. Been hooted & whistled at (by women), and had three genuinely positive reactions. I'm kilted nearly every day, but not full-time. I was in Ashland, OH, for nine months and was more apprehensive about the kilts. I have the UK Mossy Oak and am quite pleased with it. My wife & I are discussing the Dublin Irish Fest. UK will have a booth & Flogging Molly performs!

I'm not kilted full time, but do wear them out some. It surprises me sometimes when there is a total lack of reaction from people, because I know there aren't that many kilted people running around here. I do get an occasional question about why I'm wearing it or asking where I'm playing that night. People assume you're a piper if you have a kilt on, I guess.
Though I was out at dinner with a date one night and she was getting a kick out of it, and kept telling me "That woman just checked you out." She thought it was funny how the other woman was trying to look without being obvious.

And my date really, really likes me in a kilt.

I'm glad you finally had some good reactions. However, I am a little surprised at the negative reactions you have had. I have been kilted in Hocking Hills (as have other people here) which is in your neck of the woods, and have had good reaction.

Being in a stuffy uniform all night with a heavy armored vest makes me want FREEDOM !! at whatever price. Most coments I get are from kids who don't even know what a kilt is I'll put it on even to get outside and water the garden(heck , let the birds see color too). I get a lot of smiles from others and I can almost read their minds( I shure wish I had as much CLASS as That Guy), or the Ba--s to dress as Classy.Any-hoo, I can't wait for my next kilt to arrive.

If you wanna find out how many compliments and appreciative glances you're missing just take a friend with you to any shopping mall. Have the friend follow you 20 to 30 paces back as you stroll the mall kilted.

Think you'll be amazed at what the friend tells you they see after folks pass you.
