When I started wearing kilts I wore a regular belt with a subtle western design on it. Frankly it just didn't look right. It was too thin.
Of more importance than the design on the buckle is the width of the belt and size of the buckle. On a traditional kilt the belt is wide (2 1/2" -3").

If money is a concern...
A very easy project is to go to your local Home Depot and pick up a plain thick leather work belt for $10, cut it to the right size, and then dye it for about another $10 in materials. For $20 (or a little less) you have a great casual belt.
