    The ONLY difference IS the color. The "ancient" is essentially a pre-faded version of modern. The result is a "brighter" tartan in the same pattern.

    Hit it right on the head. You'll be wearing the exact same tartan, representing the exact same clan. It's simply a matter of the shade. "Pre-faded" is a good description I think.

    My personal preference is the Ancient Lamont pattern, IMHO some of the modern tartans are too dark and do not shown the pattern and colors very well.

    An individuals choice of the Ancient or Modern patterns of a tartan is a matter of personal choice. The tartans produced by various mills differ some in color.
