You think that because you haven't met a full-blown SCA period nazi. They can be very unfriendly. I haven't played SCA in almost twenty years, largely because of such people.

Yes, they are the snobs of the SCA world. They look down their noses at you and sniff when they see (usualy tiny) something that they think is not 'period'.
I agree that re-enactment should be as 'true' as possible but not everyone has the time/budget to do that. So they go with what they can. And I don't think there's anything wrong with that.
Back to the funny people in kilts!!!

Some folks take everything a bit too seriously...speaks more to their insecurities than anyhting else, I reckon. If you wanted to be really period I suppose that you'd have rickets, scurvy, syphillis and half of your teeth left in yore haid.
I certainly hope that we're only laughing at the "kilt don'ts" amongst ourselves and that there's a little bit of "there for the Grace of God go I" behind our laughs. Knowing X'smarksers, I expect that they would always be gentlemen and ladies and try to politely help the "don'ts" out if asked and that they would never be malicious about it. Constructive...let's be constructive...
...still...some of these jokers ARE pretty far out!
Best
