			Shoes

I was at a ren fair and saw that one of the vendors was making leather shoes, but he wanted quite a bit for them. Has anyone ever made their own? If so, Where can you get a pattern for it?

I ran across this link - not a lot of detail, but the design is pretty simple.

I know you can get patterns at many fabric and craft stores for those basic, suede mocassins (the lace up favorite of most ren fairies), which can be made to pretty much any length you choose.
 Be well,

Thanks for the ideas. I think I might try that pattern from the link. It seems pretty straightforward

Here's what I made to wear with my great kilt. Made pattern out of felt from pictures, then moccasin leather. Not sure I'll keep the long laces. I would not wear these with a modern kilt.

Those are nice. Do they have anything on the soles?

When I was a kid, my father had a role in the movie Catch 22, which was filmed in San Carlos, Mexico. For years after, my uncles and I would get dragged down there to go snorkling and diving. (Okay, it didn't take much dragging). One of the things we'd pick up at the flea market was locally-made sandals. The soles were made from old tires. Now, I don't know if the advent of steel belted tires has changed that, but I bet it would be worth a poke around your local junkyard to see if there's anything suitable for soling.

Smoke and Fire has a pattern for them. Look for ghillies.

My slick soled motorcycle boots were fitted with soles cut from a motorcycle tyre to give me traction back in the days when we still got snow most winters.
I think that for footwear as light as moccasins you would need to use something much lighter and more flexible or the soles would tear away from the uppers.

How about using offcuts of the stuff used for drysuits, or cutting up a charity shop vinyl shopping bag - I'm thinking waterproof so walking on wet grass will not soak right through.

I think you can buy the type of stuff that they use to sole Birkenstocks, it's a textured plastic of some kind. I can't find the site where I saw it though.
