Thanks for all the input folks!

I currently have a Tan Amerikilt, and am going to add an Original Utilikilt and a Freedom Kilt to the mix. I think I will be calling both folks and ordering over the phone, seems much more personal.

They went into production overtime when they moved to the new facility last winter. For a while there was a wait for most of the popular styles/size/colors. I had to wait about six weeks for an olive original size 35.

The upside is they called me when it was done and I rode my bike downtown to pick it up (ok, it's 25 miles one way, but definitely in the realm of things I consider doable).

Call first. See if they have what you want or something close. If they do, the turn-around is pretty short. Otherwise, it's a matter of when they will be making one.

You can't go wrong with both!

My U.K. took two weeks because it was universal length and had to be hemmed. The phone people have always been great. I like my U.K. and wear it to work at least once a week.

Having said all that, just got my F.K. . Had I done that first U.K. would have never come up on my radar. For less than a survival would cost in my size, got a poly/cotton cargo with 7 pockets and almost 10 yards of material to my door.

The only feature not offered is a 'modesty closure' and that is easy enough to add. If you are not a "normal" size you are much better off with custom made.

My F.K. fits great, the U.K. is painted on around the butt. To get a U.K. that fits my seat correctly, the waist would be four inches too big. That is way beyond darting the band. The whole thing would have to be taken apart and the fell to waist taper redone after shortening the band.

So for me it is better value to get one custom made.

U.K. does make some sharp looking casual kit, and they do put a lot of folk in kilts. They are faster than custom made, they just aren't custom made.

Steve was great to talk to when I ordered my F.K.. He seemed a bit disappointed that I did not want to use the website to order. Just like a kilt maker might not want to wear a Stillwater standard with a prince chuck, some web engineers don't want to order from a site that does anything they don't much approve of. Steve seemed to get where I was coming from and the trasnsaction was flawless.

Even with a very chaotic summer, my kilt was done on time.

Now at U.K. they have bent over backwards trying to find me a proper fit, measuring their kilts off the rack, adding my statistics to the production database, and showing great customer service and responsiveness at every turn.

If you are getting one of each, don't see how you can lose .

    Happy Kilting -- Doug

My waist size must have been unusual or really popular, because I had to wait for Utilikilt to get my size in (right after they moved to the new location). I called a couple of times and my size was not available. After calling a few weeks in a row, I asked them to let me know when my size was in. When they called me back a couple weeks later, I had the kilt within a week via USPS.

Utilikilt used to make your size if it wasn't in stock, but now they sell from a large inventory that gets replenished on some periodic basis.
