I don't know Linux, but I know Mac can bet set to automatically change your wallpaper ...
As for tartans, I would probably go to the Scottish Tartans Authority and/or House of Tartan (or another tartan search engine of your choice), download the tartans you want to see into a single folder, and set your desktop to rotate through the images in that folder.

That is PRECISELY what I do. On macs (which I have), it is VERY easy to save images from on-line. I have several from the STA that I use as wallpaper (the images accessible through tartan ferret work GREAT). I also use several I have MADE/DESIGNED using the House of Tartan (linked through the STA) tartan design studio:

(For X Marks tartan and patch, Steve has a GREAT image on his site -advertising his embroidery work. -Sorry Steve, but it is a GREAT image!-)
For ALL these images, USE THEM FOR YOUR OWN, PRIVATE, USE! ANYTHING commercial or money making is a REAL COPYRIGHT violation (assuming STA has rights to their images). Use at OWN risk.
(Presently, in honor of William Wallace's execution, I have the Wallace tartan -KiltedMusicLover should be PROUD!)

Well, here's my desktop.. all nice and tartan-ized

I added some tartans to a slide show screen saver and it's much better than the blank screen saver I was using. KDE (the desktop I use) also has a slide show for the desktop wallpaper so the wallpaper changes at user-specified intervals

Here is the one I use for my background. Murray of Atholl.. Be sure to open it up, it's brighter that it looks.

Set it to tile.
