Thanks for the link. Will the little 1/4" 3/8" attract well through leather? Also is it better to have 2 magnets or 1 magnet and a steel washer?

I find one magnet with a steel washer to be very efficient. That is a great link, if you go to the "acc" link in that link it explains how two washers can improve the strength by puting one behind the magnet and one opposite for it to close onto.

Why have the leather in between? If you have a washer on the outside of the front of the sporran and the magnet on the inside of the flap there is nothing to reduce the strength. You may want to cover one side with thin fabric to stop them snapping together.
