I'm a professional kiltmaker, I've made dozens to hundreds
-
I'm not professional, but I've made a good number of kilts (four or more)
-
Professional? Ha! I've made 1, 2 or 3.
-
I'm working on my first one right now!
-
I'm thinking about it.
-
No way, forget it! That's why I go to work and/or pinch my pennies!

Where 4 Scotsmen gather there'll usually be a fifth.

I've made about 5 or 6 kilts for friends over the last few years. None of them were "real" tartans, just Plaid wool, but they turned out pretty good. I'd like to definitely practice a bit more and do it as a side job.

As soon as I can procure myself a sewing machine I'm going to have a go at an X kilt.

That is why I buy my wife all the sewing stuff she wants... That way I can throw my personal projects on the "list".

I thought some striped material would make a good kilt, so I set to work and then realised that for the best results I need about 50 tiny pleats, 4/10ths of an inch reveals so the effect is of a black/grey/white kilt which flashes alternate inner pleats of red and black and black and white.
I have just reached pleat no 25 and stopped as it is 2am.
I think it is either an obsession or an addiction.

I don't think that I ever will, as I do not have the talent or the inclination, I like Ron am glad to pay those with the talent for their products, it just isn't me. I can sew on a button but thats about it.

Well econimically, if you are full time gainfully employed, you are rpobably better off buying them. My problem is that I can (or think I can) do anything.

Like a few others, I do not have the talent to operate a sewing machine and make clothing that I would like to be seen in. I have tried in the past, but I find that I am not proud of the results. That said, I will defer to those that have the talent. I find that each of us has particular skills that stand out, and other skills that should (for good reason) remain hidden.
In the words of Charles Emerson Winchester III, (on M*A*S*H) "I have hands that can make a scalpel sing, but most of all I wanted to play (piano). I can play the notes, but I cannot make the music."

I must point out Alan that this poll will be skewed due to our members. We are not just kilt wearers but kilt aficionados. We all don't have just one kilt in our clan tartan and noone on this forum believes in such. We are willing to explore many different styles of kilt and not to decry modern, casual or traditional be them Pakistani, NA or Scotish made. Members here are more apt to at least try to make our own kilts. Be it to feed our addiction or to understand and appreciate the dynamics of how a kilt and how it is made. We are unique here at XMarks.
