I'm a professional kiltmaker, I've made dozens to hundreds
-
I'm not professional, but I've made a good number of kilts (four or more)
-
Professional? Ha! I've made 1, 2 or 3.
-
I'm working on my first one right now!
-
I'm thinking about it.

No way, forget it! That's why I go to work and/or pinch my pennies!

Three (so far).
One straight up knife pleated modern in poly-cotton, very early on. Most ochen' icky-poo.
One resewn SWK economy Irish National, done up with FOUR box pleats (and them's big ol' boxes, too, a fellow could hurt himself moving them), hand sewn and right poorly too.
One resewn SWK economy leatherneck, done up with six box pleats, machine sewn. Surprisingly wearable. As long as I don't compare it to a real kilt, made by a real kilt maker, I like it.
And more to come!

I can do some basic sewing, but definitely don't have the patience to properly make a kilt. If I attempted to make one, it would probably look basically like a kilt, but the lines wouldn't be straight, the stitches would be very loose, etc.
It's better for me to pay someone else to do it.

I am currently chalking out the pleats on my first X-Kilt. It's not too bad if you just take a little time here, a little time there...

I've made one prototype 8-yd knife pleat. As expected, it was a learning experience. I made it out of a reasonably heavy fabric from a large chain that regularly advertises in the comic pages of 2 of Toronto's papers. Recently I picked up some wool/viscose tartan from them. It was a bolt end and (amazingly) the selvedges were in good shape. I'm planning on doing a 4-5 yard box pleat with it. Just trying to work out how to taper it.

I've made several kilts now.
Black Watch MIniature sett
Camo canvas
generic tartan
2 black bull denim kilts, one mine, one my brother-in-law's
a second camo kilt that is just about finished, just needs buckles. That's my "pocket prototype kilt. I have multiple pockets made from differing techniques on that one.
My projects right now are to build the faux lizard leather kilt and retailor my SWK thrifty Irish national.
I'm not a professional yet, but give me a year or two and I'll be hanging out my shingle.
