Then he introduces me to the older women he is with he tells me she is from Scotland, here is where it gets interesting; so here is how our conversation went:
Older Women "You're wearing your kilt?"
Me "One of them."
Older Women "Shopping?"
Me "Yes"
Older Women "What tartan is that, it's not that I'm colour blind, I just can tell"
Me "It's the X-Marks the Scot tartan"
Older Women "Whats that"
Me "It's an on-line forum I belong to"
Older Women "I see....Your not wearing your Family tartan?"
Me "No, it's at home"
If you were to hear the disdain in her voice well it was palpable, I walked away thinking you can't please all the people all the time. The cashier saw all of this, and she said well I like it, did you know there was an article in the newspaper today. I said that I knew about it but had not seen it yet, then she gives me a paper, mind you they sell the paper as well. I guess it was the power of the kilt with her, all in all I guess it was a normal day kilted.

And, I'd like to add that clans didn't even associate themselves with a specific tartan until, what, two hundred years ago?

I completely agree. Even if you find someone that doesn't have a problem with the fact that you're wearing a kilt, sometimes they still have problems with the one you're wearing. One of my friends just recently moved here from Ireland, and he saw me in the pub wearing my Irish National Tartan, and he always like to make fun of me for wearing a "skirt". I told him that at least I was wearing his countries tartan, and he didn't care. He still thinks that the kilts are silly.
So it just goes to prove, that even if someone is Irish, Scottish, Welsh, or whatever, that not even everyone from those countries appreciates the kilt.
