Well, Tony always was referred to as an International Playboy...sort of a military/industrial complex version of Hugh Hefner.
It's just having Robert downey play him...sort of like having Sam Jackson playing Nick Fury...it's revisionist comic book history. If you read the Ultimates series from Marvel the characters all got a little more edgy and it was very obvious that the artist was basing his Nick Fury directly on Samuel L. Jackson. This is what happens when the comic book company starts producing its own movies.
