The problem also appears to be that they can not make enough quantity to bring the price down. So it remains a "specialty" item.
If your legs do not have thunder calves, you might try the argyle hose sold for wear with plus fours for golfers. If your calves are too large (like mine) the argyle hose will be stretched out of shape and not look good.

Did you try the Tartan Thistle? Their prices are quite reasonable.
For me, I'd rather pay a bit more and get a quality item that will last -- that was my Scottish grandmother's definition of being frugal.
