Well Sean, the answer is quit simple. A normal sport coat is too long when worn with a kilt.
To show off the pleats, kilt jackets are cut so the hem extends no lower than the bottom of the Fell. They are also cut away in the front so they do not interfere with the sporran.
If you put on a normal jacket and look at the length of the hem in relation to the sleeve you will find that the hem is significantly lower than the sleeve. This is to cover and hide the butt and the wrinkle in the back where the legs begin.
On a kilt-cut jacket the hem will be about the same as the sleeve length. Because there is no wrinkle in the back of a kilt, as there is with trousers, but lovely pleats and we don't need to hide that area but want to show it off.
My Kilt-Cut Sports Jacket differs from a normal Argyle type of jacket in that I have removed all the extra details such as gauntlet cuffs, epaulets, and scalloped pocket flaps that to most people these days scream costume or formal wear. I also used normal sport coat buttons instead of fancy silver or horn to further "dress-down" the look.
Yes, many of our members have cut down sport coats to achieve the same look and some of them have been wonderful. But that level of sewing experience is beyond the norm. So I thought to offer a made from scratch jacket with the same features. If you will look at some of the posts of those who have finished their DIY jackets you will see that they were going for the same jacket I now offer.
