If you want to use the ties you've got and you're a pencil-neck like me, even a full Windsor won't do the trick. However, once you have the front (wide part) of the tie properly located at the top of the belt buckle, pull the part tied around your neck until the narrow part of the tie is also of proper length. Pinch the excess in the neck, cut it off, and sew the ends together. Voila! a kilt-length tie custom made for you.

Perfect! -And to make that delicate cut behind the neck you will need one of my newly marketed STMD's. I am out of the beta stage, and ready to go into production as soon as I get the needed venture capital......

What if your clip on tie is too long?

I'm not sure I want to ask, but what are STMD's?

“Saxon Tie Modification Device”
An ingenious tool devised by our very own James MacMillan although he does actually suggest either tucking the long bits into the shirt or into the kilt if wearing a T shirt. The STMD is for those too lazy to actually do the tucking or for those Marines that can't actually grasp that particular concept.

Attention all stations and all the ships at sea!
Breaking news, and Bad news at that! The production and testing facilities of the STMD's have been confiscated by the NPC (neighbor's pregnant cat) and any further development will have to be halted.
In the interim, If all interested parties wanting the shortening of your saxon ties, will mail them to me, together with a pre-paid self-addresses stamped envelope, (and a crisp new portrait of U.S. President Abe Lincoln) I will shorten them for you and return them to you by return mail. [Expect return delivery in seven to ten working months.]
P. S. The wife claims the left-over pieces for use in an up-coming patch-work quilt. Photos on completion!

Not anymore, now Will's worth more, so if I send down a blue note I would of course expect change...

If you are on the tall side you can buy a Velcro tie from a uniform catalog. They come in the solid colors that work well with most tartans, are made of polyester, and do not need to be tied, but have a full Windsor knot. I would look for police officer supply catalogs. If you have a choice of lengths get the regular length. To short with pants, but just right for a traditional cut kilt.
