I have a Folkmanis bear puppet that works the same way. Over the years, I've discovered that, for most uses, I actually prefer the muppet approach -- the hand is on a stick, like a marionette, only controlled from below, instead of above. It keeps the operator from having to be directly behind the muppet all the time.
