That's one of the best rides on Amtrak Hamish, love the Talgos. I prefer that to flying between Vancouver BC and Seattle. (oh the travels and troubles I had on that train ... )

I'm another that's traveled on Amtrak and VIA Rail and, so far as I know, never had anything derogatory said to or about me. I'm not a full time kiltie, either, but on planes and trains it's definitely my favourite for comfort.

Well,
I made it! There and back! The there was kilted, and by far the most comfortable travel I have ever done. On the way back... church ran late and I didn't have time to change back into my kilt before climbing back on the train. (While I can sing in my church choir in my kilt, we are suposed to wear black from the waist down, and I don't own a plain black kilt yet, so it is trousers for now). I don't think I'll travel in pants again.
I do need to get a few more kilts in more colors so I can wear them.
Cheers
Chris

That low flying train behind the locomotive in your picture Ham, it's built by Renfe Talgo, a Spanish company and uses a pendular suspension so when the train goes around a curve centrifugal force causes it to swing outward. In the diner (or at the bar !!!) a glass won't spill or move when this happens. It's really cool especially when you know the train is turning but your juice (or .... beer ...) stays put.
CT - jonesin' in proper fashion

Ah! Thanks for that, Cameron. I know nothing about trains, but I do recall commenting on the smoothness of the ride. I guess that was a result of the Talgos technology. I don't recall leaving my seat at all during the journey - certainly the diner and the bar remained un-visited!! I was impressed by the video commentary pointing out places of interest along the way.

As you can read from my posts about traveling on my recent cruise, if you do a little bit of planning it is do-able!

One thing worth seeing in my opinion
The bar/cafe car has an impressive relief map painted on the ceiling that lights up, even has the two house on "my" island near Anacortes.
I think one of these days I'll sit down and write a blog about "the woman from Surrey, Rob Lies, and myself from one of the more memorable trips down from Van.
CT - 'tis indeed a smooth ride.
