No kids or fondness of the stones...maybe a mix of something modern that peaks his interest like relating to a hobby or a symbol of something that has touched his heart/life (other than you of course).

I like Rabs' spirals! I would pick the first one. I also like the idea about a word that means something special, but I know that can be really hard to narrow down as we all have many words in our life that hold meaning.
