Several months actually. I just knitted when watching TV (I don't watch much). I took no lessons and wouldn't presume to give lessons. My mom taught me knit and purl and handed me some cheap yarn to keep me out of trouble. The afghan helped me to get used to knitting and even out my stitches.

For a first or 100th project they look great. When I was playing at hand knitting I carried the knitting with me. When I had a few minutes of down time I would knit a few rows. I have a flat bed knitting machine that has my attention. Looking at your project I may pick my needles back up.

Mark, those hose are absolutely fantastic.
We'll see how long it takes me to get to the point (ha!) that I can do hose like that.

I have yet to knit my own Kilt Hose (I have prospective yarn next to me as we type) but Sweetie gave me a pair she knit for me. I love them, they are quite warm so I did not get a chance to wear them until recently. (it has been a warm fall here in NYC)
The kilt is a Freedom Cargo in Carhart gold with an RKilts bronze sporran. The "Skein Dubh" is from Target. I am proud of Sweetie, and she cant wait to see me knit my own.

You do have a Sweetie, there is obliviously a lot of time and love in those hose. Now that it is cooler I hope you are going to put on your kilt finery, her hose, and take her out to show off.

I've knitted two pairs so far, both in DK (that's sport weight in the US) wool blends. I think pictures of them are somewhere in the old DIY forums.
I am however a reasonably experienced knitter so if anyone needs help with a pattern I'd be happy to help.

As for multicolour patterns and 4-ply (that's fingering weight wool), well, it is a rough start. I would not recommend it for your first venturing into knitting...
