    Clan badges

I suppose this is smearing over a bit into heraldry, but has anyone had experience designing a clan badge and having one cast?

I only ask because it occurred to me that I might be able to do one for my mom's family even though we really don't, to my knowledge, have one. There are elements of Auld William's coat of arms that could be used and a motto...how involved is it?

I have my favorite jewelry folks, Ram's Horn Studios...would it be more expedient to sketch up a design and ship it off to them or is the process of doing the pewter casting something that a reasonably capable guy could manage on his own?

It depends on which system your jeweler uses to create their molds. If they hand carve a master plug, a simple sketch of the design will allow the plug artist to create a master. But you would be relying on that persons artistic talent to render your sketch into a 3D hard copy.
If they use some form of 3axis computer to create the plug they will need a design compatible with their computer. This is usually an MS Illustrator design.

I am currently doing much the same for an idea I've been toying with for a couple of months. The people who will do the actual casting are in Scotland so I will be sending them a full scale badge which I am carving. They will then use their CAD machine to enter the design into their computer which will create the molds.

3D modeling is right up my alley. I am a Mechanical engineer, we use a process called Rapid prototyping. It involves making a 3D model, and sending it to a 3D printer. The printer is usually offsite so it is usually made out of urethane, wax, or some other plastic. We then can use the rapid prototype to make a mold and pour.

Voila, you have a finished product... ok, not so easy and cheap but might be worth looking into.

I have a jeweler who does the lost wax method, and has made some really nice pieces for me. The method should work on clan badges.

Hey Sister - That is one impressive web site. And the prices are pretty good too.

I'm going to order a couple of things from there.

    Thanks!
