    Scene 31

After arming ourselves with the sidearms from our fallen guards, the three of us made our way to the basement. Ms. Swan had turned on her tracking unit and was closely watching the signal strength to determine if we were getting close.

When we reached the basement, we cautiously opened the door at the bottom, ready to disable any guard there, but no guard was in sight. We followed the stronger signal to a hallway lined with doors. Again, no guards were present.

The strongest signal seemed to come from the door at the far end of the hallway. When we examined the door, we found it to be locked.

“I can blow the door,” said Ms. Hawk.

“Not yet,” I replied. “Let’s see who’s inside first.”

As my two associates kept watch, I knocked on the door. I called through the door, “Dirka, are you in there?”

“Yes,” came the reply from within. “Mr. Dove?”

“That’s right. Keep away from the door. We have to force it open”

Ms. Hawk quickly applied a small explosive charge to the lock, along with an electronic detonator. We all stepped back from the door and Ms. Hawk pressed the switch on the detonator control she carried.

With a quick flash and a small puff of smoke, the explosive blew out the lock on the door.

As my two associates kept guard, I pushed open the door carefully. Inside, I saw Dirka at the back of the room. “Come on,” I said. “We’re getting you out of here.”

Dirka joined us in the hallway and I quickly introduced her to my associates. “Any idea where my other associates are being held?” I asked her.

“It should be right around here,” she said. “For all I know, they could be behind any of these doors.”

A quick check of the doors revealed that my associates were indeed being held there. Soon, the other five of my associates had been freed from their cell and were with us in the hallway.

“The kidnap victims are being held on another part of this floor,” I told them. “We need to get them and get out of here.”

“What about Ivana?” demanded Dirka. “You’re not going to let her get away with this?”

“I’m sorry,” I told her. “I want to stop her, and we will. However, our first priority is to rescue those men, including your husband.”

I turned to Ms. Swan. “Go back upstairs and join the men there. Ms. Falcon, go with her. You need to secure transportation for everyone. That includes all of us here, the four men upstairs, and at least five or six kidnap victims.”

“Right’” said the two in unison. They quickly moved down the hallway.

“The rest of you,” I continued, “Let’s go rescue those men.”

    Commercial Break

Inside the back of a van

A tall, dark haired woman is sitting in front of a large communications console. She wears a small headset and microphone.

“This is Starling in the bird roost. All units, check in,” she says into the mike.

The scene changes to inside a vehicle. We see a woman with blond hair tied back in a ponytail wearing the same type headset.

    “Mobile unit, ready,” she says.

The scene changes to the top of a building. A red haired woman has a rifle resting on the ledge and she is watching through the scope. She wears the same headset.

    “Overhead guard, ready,” she says.

The scene changes to outside a door to a building. An African American woman dressed all in black is waiting. She also has the same headset.

    “Entry unit, ready,” she says.

The scene changes to an electrical panel. The panel is open and several wires are attached to the circuits within. The wires lead to a unit with several switches. A young woman with oriental features hovers over the switches. She too has the same headset.

    “Off switch, ready,” she says.

The scene changes back to the back of the van.

“All units report ready,” she says. “Move out.”

The scene changes to show just a headset. We hear the announcer’s voice.

“Advanced communications from Freelander Electronics, a subsidiary of X Marks the Scot. Keeping you in contact with your team.”

The seven of us carefully made our way to where I had seen the reeducation room. Again, no guards were to be seen.

We burst into the room, surprising the two technicians working there.

“Shut down the machines!” I demanded.

The technicians quickly moved to shut down the process, obviously intimidated by our number and weapons. As I watched through the window, I noticed the display of images had stopped.

“Ms. Starling, Ms. Stork, go see to the men. Dirka, go with them and see if your husband is there. Ms. Raven, tie up these men.”

While Ms. Raven saw to the men and Ms. Hawk kept guard, the rest of us moved into the other room.

Dirka saw me come in. “He’s not here,” she said, the worry obvious in her voice.

I quickly scanned the faces of the men. The three men we had originally set out to rescue were there, as well as Andrew and Robert. “Okay, there are other rooms here. Dirka, come with me. Everyone else, get the men ready to move.”

The two of us moved down the hallway. Shortly, we came to a large room containing many beds. On the beds were twenty-four different men and women.

We moved down the rows of beds, checking the people there. Each of them were unconscious and we couldn’t revive them.

Finally, Dirka called out. “Here he is. Oh my God, what have they done to him? What have they done to all these people?”

I moved to join her by her husband’s bed. “I don’t know, but we can’t get them all out on our own. We’re going to have to call for help. Let’s see if we can move him.”

Her husband was not connected to any life sustaining equipment, so we decided to risk his movement. I carefully picked him up in a fireman’s carry and we moved back to join my associates. Once there, we told them what we had found.

The men had been released from the reeducation chairs, but none of them were able to move on their own. Each was only semi-conscious and their legs were weak from being seated so long.

“Each of you help one of these men,” I told my associates. “Dirka, we’re going to need you to lead the way for us.”
