Absolutely! Even under the old "rules" the day sporran would be worn in the evening as long as you weren't in evening (i.e. formal) wear. Check out the ball scene in the movie "Tunes of Glory" (~1961); most of the civilians are wearing fine tweed jackets and what we would call day sporrans at an evening event that was not a formal event. Today, I'd agree with what everyone else has said.
