Been asked a couple times, once at Home Depot in 2002, then recently at another hardware store, by someone who I know fairly well...

My response is always "Not with 8 yards of
wool wrapped around me." If they mention
my knees or legs, I say "That's not the part
that matters." This leaves some good
opportunities open, and if they want to
take them it can get quite fun.

I just shipped a new kilt to a wonderful lady who is overwhelmingly excited about finding a kilt for her husband. They live WAY up in the Northwest Territory of Canada! Folks up inside the Arctic Circle must just experience the cold as a part of everyday life. Sounds like the new kilt will warm things up a bit for both of them!

Gives me a chance to re-use an old line from my childhood:

    "You must be cold."

"Oh, aye...I've got icicles on my t@$ticles!"

I think people generally want to talk to someone in a kilt if they aren't used to seeing a kilted fellow. That's a nice innocuous way of starting a conversation, and a lot better than "what's underneath?" It kind of opens a door for further talk without being rude, I guess.

Besides, unless you've worn a kilt in the cold, you don't know just how warm it is. Most folks don't know about all those layers of wool until they ask--and we educate. I hope they keep asking.

Especially when they're the ones shivering.

    Old Hiker's got it,

First time I was asked that it was during a winter storm in Prescott; was by a very attractive hostess at the Prescott Mining Co. restaurant. She meant well.

I just smiled and said, "Nope, I've got a heater under there." She blushed and smiled at the same time. Its my stock answer now.

Ron I think I'll steal that one for the cold question - just as I also have been grinning and saying "Question 13" for the other question.

Just another example of a question that no one would think to ask a woman in a dress/skirt in the same situation.

The only time I have had to deal with that question was when I was out preparing to clear my driveway of snow. The tone of voice in which the question was asked was clearly insolent, so I replied simply, "No."

"I should think you would be." Still insolent.

"You would be wrong." At that point I fired up the snow blower. End of conversation.

I would think the question would be a great way to start a conversation...It appears that there may be an interest in meeting the kilted and it's an easy way to break the ice (pardon the pun).
