Heavy Kilt

Even with the well washed beaten smooth blankets I have they would have to be worn on the outside of something more skin friendly - the options were kilt or coat.

Just at the moment I have too much going on to be sewing, but hopefully things will settle down in a while.

I too am curious.

We use about 200 of these blankets per season. Perhaps I'll save some scraps for tinkering. I may have to pull out our old seam sealing press to get good pleats. Har.

Not as of yet. This whole "poor college kid thing" is getting rough on the pocket, between debts and car breakage, I just haven't got the spare cash to put towards making one of these.

Here is hoping for a break in spending soon, or at least my own sewing machine for Christmas (which I can use as an excuse to make some things)!

When I was in the Navy ('87-'92), our wool blankets were grey, with a black "US" stenciled on them. They were quite warm... I remember spending a night on USS Papago while in drydock. The side of the ship had been removed so the engines could be changed out, and it was winter in Virginia. It got down into negative temperatures Fahrenheit that night, but about six of those blankets bundled around me kept me toasty warm all night.

I cant see why it wouldn't hold a pleat: the WW2 regimental kilts were a 20oz in a blanket weave...

Update.

I've got my old green monster, which has been washed-and-dryed down to a mere shadow of its former fuzzy self. I've done the scientific "thumb test" comparing it with the wool in my leatherneck Matt Newsome and it is in the ballpark. I've got a second blanket (to work on first) that's in the wash even as we speak (or even as I type, at least). It is "de-fuzzing" nicely, a few more washes and I'll give it a try.

I would think that if its wool it would hold a pleat, given you use enough heat and a wet press cloth. Why don't you do what the old British regiments did, sew a small swatch of fabric where your willie hangs.

Just had this idea after reading another post earlier today. The old Army wool blanket was green with a black US printed on one side. If the kilt could be made with the US right in the middle of the front apron, that would be awesome. Did anything come of this? Has anyone tried it? I'm thinking of getting a couple of blankets and giving them to a lady here that makes period costumes. She did a great box pleat kilt for a buddy using his German Army camoflage fabric. Let me know if anyone tried this please.

I ordered a Czech wool blanket from Sportsmansguide.com with this idea in mind (I've had in bouncing around the back of my head for a couple of years now), but haven't started yet. I'm also thinking box pleat (although two of those British Off-Whites sown together would make a sweet feilidh-mhor).
