Don't worry. At 13, trying to act "cool" [if that indeed is still the word!] when so many things are going on is of paramount importance. It's important to choose your times as there is a world of difference between the labels a 13 year old will attach to 'kiltedness' and how a 17 year old will take it.
In my case, I debuted my own kilt at my son's high school graduation--which was perfect timing. It also helped that my ex goes with a guy who wears a woman's dress when he goes dancing. Without any prompting on my part, one of my son's buddies quipped "Now there's a REAL man's dress!" in front of my [furious] ex. Sweet.
Now that he's 20 and starting to earn a decent income, I thought I'd forego buying my son towels or housewares [boring]. He's enthusiastically awaiting for some of the real necessities of life!
