I learned something new with this gift, too. I was always under the impression that a shillelagh was an Irish walking stick. I was wrong. It's a short "club" that Irishmen carried with them on walks to fend off predators, 4-legged as well as the 2-legged varieties.
Very nice! MY friend makes them, just for fun. I have one in my jeep. He's given them to our favorite barkeeps as well. I'll snap a pic of mine & post it up later.
When my wife and I were in Ireland last year, her Italian Uncle asked us to bring one home for him. I too was under the impression that it was a walking stick. Now I think he just wanted to beat me with it. Merry Christmas.
