I was going to say you could tell your father that you wanted to wear the kilt to celebrate your heritage, but if that won't work, perhaps you could get by on the comfort angle, you also might want to show your dad the Casual, Dressy and Formal picture threads for an idea of how sharp a kilt can be.

    Hey, welcome to the forum!
I think it's a bit hard to just state "good" reasons to wear a kilt without knowing anything about your father or his reservations about the kilt. Is it simply him wondering why you would be interested in this? Then you should def follow McMurdo's advice. My father would never wear a kilt, but is very supportive of my wearing it (good-natured ribbing aside). I think part of it is just the fact that he knows how snazzy I can look in it and I'm not normally one to dress up.
Is there another reason he might have reservations about the kilt? Then we can tailor our advice to fit the need. Good luck with this!

It could be that his concern is based not on you wearing the kilt, but more about what other's reactions about you would be. When I first started wearing kilts, my wife was like, whatever, but her mom was really concerned. After talking to her, turns out she was more worried about what other people would think of me being kilted. After seeing me kilted for a while, and seeing that I don't mind what other people think, and actually after seeing that most people don't react one way or the other, she got used to it, and now thinks it is kind of cool.

Sorry about the lack of detail - been playing games I got for Christmas and got sidetracked ;). I asked him straight-out why he doesn't want me to wear a kilt and he said there were two reasons - it's "ridiculous" and he is opposed to the unusual in any form, especially clothing. Yes, he is trying to be perfectly normal and conformist (contrary to my views, but whatever. I'll be out of the house in a few years.) It is possible people's reactions might be worrying him, in which case I'll show him this thread and others.

Thanks for all the help! I will probably get a SWK Standard if he approves, but I'll start with a "trainer" kilt that won't put me back too far if I'm forbidden even after showing him myself in one and pics of others - this would be a Thrifty for me.

Hi Eugene from central Scotland. I have wanted a kilt for many years and eventually got around to it 2 years ago. I have since made it into a hobby and when I travel around Scotland I make a point of visiting kilt/accessory shops and that is my souvenir of the place. I have a kilt pin from Perth, a buckle from Oban, a belt strap from the Isle of Skye and so on. I bought the majority of my kilt outfit in Inverness as I felt that it was the right thing to do. I wear it as often as I can, but most people here in Scotland only wear it to a formal function or less formally to a Scotland match. As far as I can see from this website kilt wearing has become more common in the USA and Canada.

    Nigel,
Welcome to the rabble, from across I-5 in Springfield. We're an odd bunch, but fun. Smart lad to check with your principle first, as there have been occasions where some have been sent home from school when they were wearing a kilt. Might I ask which High school you attend. North is my alma mater, and as you no doubt know, "The Home of the Highlanders".
