    At the Rose Parade

My Buddy Russ just sent me an IM.

The VMI Marching Band is in the Rose Parade this year. They have a bagpipe corp - They wore their kilts!!!

I have not seen it myself, but I will keep my eyes open for a post parade photo.

    VMI Pipes and Drums

I heard Scotland the Brave long before the cameras showed the band. They have a beautiful tartan that matches the color of their military tunics.

I didn't see any photos from the parade, but there are photos of the band on the VMI website. http://www.vmi.edu/Band.aspx?id=282 It also explains the New Market Battlefield Tartan and the meaning of the colors.

You can hear them on the cadet's band page. http://cadets.vmi.edu/band/pipe&.htm

There is also a video at this site. Video

There is an interesting article on two of the cadets in the band from Kentucky here: Article

I presume that the band grew weary of being asked that nagging question, so they answered the question in the name of the band - The VMI Regimental Band and Pipe Band. Such forethought!

I saw them on TV this morning. They looked and sounded great. Of course, Al Roker had to make some high wind and cold temperature jokes. Other than that, it was really nice to see. Unfortunately, they were the only ones in the parade with kilts. Would have been nice to see a SAMS color guard.

A great looking group of some of this country's finest young men!

I didn't see them this morning but I heard them in the background as I was making a late breakfast. Glad to know who I was listening to.

Great tartan. It goes with that jacket perfectly. One of the best band uniforms I've ever seen.

Just a side note for next year, if you get the Home and Garden channel, watch the parade there, they know their flowers, and they let the bands play. There is also an hour before the parade on that channel with the making of the floats - very interesting.

    DALE.

You don't have to be Scottish to be comfortable!

That's great. I didn't know the Virginia Military Institute had a pipeband. And I really love that tartan.
