Activity suggestions for a Scotsman visiting Kentucky
I reckon this is more for the Central Kentucky peeps, but I work with a woman who was a rotary scholar in college, and she spent some time in Scotland during her studies. Her host "father" will be visiting January 20-27 (alas, too late for the Kilt Night in Louisville), and she's looking for suggestions for possible activities. I suggested the Bourbon Trail, but he thinks "bourbon is for wussies." Heh. Anyway, if anyone has general ideas, or ones that are more centered on central Kentucky, please feel free to pass them along.
Thanks!

Bourbon is for wussies? Is there no of that moonshine left down there? That ought to at least get his attention for a little while...

I guess he has never sipped any Makers Mark or any of at least a dozen other excellent bourbons.

How about a day in Berea, KY to shop for some artisinial Americana craftwork? On January 26, you can hear "bluezzgrazz" from Mud Pi at the Main Street Cafe (6:00), and then try out some Contra Dance at the Russel Acton Folk Center at 7:30 (live music, no experience needed).
What one-time visit to Central Kentucky would be complete without a short hike into Mammoth Cave, where the temperature is the same year 'round?
Regards,
Rex.

Reason: haste, first time around.

I, too, was going to suggest Mammoth Cave. Definitely something to see.

The New York Times recently provided a review of a selection of bourbons, in which they said,
If you love whiskey but haven’t thought of bourbon as being in the same league as a good Scotch, Irish and even, these days, rye, you owe it to yourself to give it another try. A well-made, well-aged bourbon offers a gorgeous spectrum of flavors, beginning with a distinctive sweetness that can, depending on the distiller’s aim, turn spicy and peppery with clear fruitiness, or mellow into a creamy caramel toffee with highlights of citrus.
Unfortunately, Makers Mark did not make the cut.

Rex.

I remember the beauty of the horse farms when I lived in Lexington...maybe too obvious.
I also remember some Clinch River shine, but that was a bit east and south of y'all. Smooooootttthhhhh.....
