All-black balmoral?

I know there is a man at brotherhood of the kilt that hand makes balmorals. He can take custom orders too. Might want to look him up, or at least ask his advice.

Honestly, it's a lot easier if you just buy a standard undiced balmoral with a red toorie and then change the toorie for a different color yourself. That's what I did. Any craft store will have pompoms of the proper size in a wide variety of colors. With some scissors, a needle, and some thread you'll have an all-black balmoral. Or in my case a navy and black one.

The book 'So You're Going To Wear The Kilt' gives a good description on how to make and change the toorie on the Balmoral. If you can find one ready made (and the right size) as suggested, all the better. Like you I don't like the red toorie (tradition or no tradition) and I enquired with a well respected Highlandwear specialist some years ago about getting one with a black toorie and he knew what I meant but said "I've no seen wan o' those furr years". Yes 'Golly' (now there's someone who does look good in a kilt!)did wear one in 'Monarch of The glen' so I suppose they must be traditional.

I suspect that Jack Daw is making a reference to a common phrase issued to children at the dinner table in the late 70's and early 80's who were reluctant to eat certain fare. Parents would note "Eat your ________ there are children starving in Africa!" The less wise children would often respond with "Can we send this to them?" with varying parental repercussions.

I read his post and see a off handed comment half remembered from childhood used to show his dislike of toories, and was not intended as a slight against Africans.

It's been a while since those innocent days of childhood at the dinner table under the gaze of our parents. We are now the grown ups, and far more aware of the grim reality of the horrors of starvation and malnutrition.

I didn't find Jack Daw's comment terribly funny, but as a child of the late 70's and early 80's I know where he was coming from. In the future perhaps we should leave such phrases in the past.

Let's all try our best to keep X Marks the Scot a respectful place and recognize that we are a family friendly and international community.
