I can relate. My favorite kilt is a haigh waisted Canadian military issue Black Watch, for that exact reason.

Yes, in normal light, the red stripe does stand out. BUT in the sunshine, it is the light blue stripe that "dominates",It becomes almost "fluorescent" & is the feature almost always commented on.
As to the "very" high waist., after a lot of research, Patrick,decided that this was what was needed. ( parameters were, 1800-1812.- to be worn with a Coatee style coat (like the uniform coat) or a "tail coat. With or with out a "vest.
