Sporran VS Fanny Pack...

I’ve been known to wear both, and even at the same time, but I wear a Fanny Pack off to the side (hip).
I can't play guitar with a sporran (or belt buckle) in front.

Although horizontal, it has about the same carrying capacity as a Nightstalker sporran.

I've seen a couple of guys wearing kilts with whatever-packs (don't want to offend anyone), and, frankly, they looked OK to me. In fact, I loaned a kilt to my daughter's boyfriend one time, and all I had to offer was a small whatever-pack, and he looked fine. In fact, it didn't look much different.

Having said that, a problem with the pack as opposed to the sporran is that it won't fall down between the knees for purposes of modesty when one sits. Standing they're fine, but I don't care to end up like the guy next to the queen in that famous photo. (the curious can look here: http://urbanlegends.about.com/librar...s_soldiers.htm.

I've also seen the packs and sporrans worn to the side (as they often were in auld lang syne), and they don't look too bad either. I only do that if I dance with a lady or play a guitar.

Bottom line, it is traditional to wear a sporran in the front these days, and, if you do, no one will pay the least attention. If dressed casually, a ***-pack probably won't be noticed if worn in front or a bit to the side, and it is practical.

I like sporrans, and now that I have several, that's what I prefer. I don't wear whatever-packs, but I'm sure they look good on you. (Think Rodney Dangerfield.)

Thank you, Jim, and I'll ignore the Rodney Dangerfield comment. I have one sporran and two ***-packs, and I very much prefer the ***-packs because they are far more convenient and less expensive and I can wear them with pants when I'm doing something that would get a kilt intolerably dirty. I wear my ***-packs in front because that makes them more convenient for me than for a thief, and their having four compartments vice just one spares me the aggravation of whatever I want always being at the very bottom, as if in a duffel bag. But on traditionally dressy occasions, such as a dinner party or serving at church, I wear the sporran because that is what its expected.

I can't say I am a fan of fanny packs, except the larger ones that are actually made for hiking. If I really felt I needed one I get a Nightstalker instead.
